It’s mid-September and officially the fall season! This is the time of the year for cooler weather, falling leaves, getting into a routine with school, and pumpkin everything. Yes, you can’t deny it – pumpkins and “pumpkin spice” everywhere.

But what exactly is that – pumpkin spice – all about, anyway?

Pumpkin pie spice is known as an American spice mix commonly used as a catch-all ingredient in pumpkin pie. It is generally a blend of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and allspice – and if you can find it, it’s a great all-in-one fall spice to use in lieu of measuring tiny amounts of each of the aforementioned spices.

One of the earliest known American recipes using a similar spice mix can be found as far back as 1796, published in the first known cookbook in the states, American Cookery, written by Amelia Simmons.

It is similar to the British spice – known as mixed spice, or more commonly pudding spice – a blend of sweet spices, dominantly cinnamon, often used in baking or for fruits and sweets, dating from cookbooks as far back as 1828.

Past the history of the spice, it still rings as popular today. Or else I wouldn’t be writing about it, right?

Here’s proof: According to Business Insider, as of 2016, pumpkin spice consumables produce $500 million in annual sales. Wow is an understatement!

Even better, you can eat your pumpkin, and wear it, too. Don’t worry about all the artificial ingredients and fillers you can’t pronounce, either. That’s right, natural mamas – nothing extra, just the good stuff!
